He was honored in June for saving the life of Jennifer Clough, 42, of Norway by removing her from her burning car after it was struck head-on at high speed on Waterford Road in Norway on April 22.

The driver of the car that struck Clough's vehicle was William Stella, 36, of Stoneham, Massachusetts, who died at the scene. Davis was assisted at the scene by Norway police officer Brandon Correia.

The American Legion Department of Maine also honored Davis with a Public Service Award, naming him Law Enforcement Officer of the Year at its annual convention in Bangor for his handling of the accident.

Davis, his wife and two sons live in Oxford.

Sheriff Wayne Gallant said Sgt. Tim Holland of Peru retired earlier in the year, and Davis was one of two people to apply for the position.

Gallant said the oral interviews were conducted by William Gagne, chief deputy of the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office; Capt. Daniel Garbarini of the Rumford Police Department; Lt. David Radcliffe with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office; and Capt. Chris Wainwright of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

“I don’t sit on the board" and neither does Chief Deputy Hart Daley, Gallant said. “We give the board the questions, and they move forward with it.”

Gallant said the interviews were “close,” but in the end, Davis was given the position.

Oxford County commissioners voted 3-0 to open the corporal's position to applicants.
